I just read a review of 5-8-77 and the reviewer was pretty down on the show saying it was overrated.I used to feel the same way, maybe because everyone would always blow their load over that show and i tend to roll my eyes at "everyone" because quite frankly most Deadheads are morons and idiot durg users(i too am a drug user but no idiot). Most people cant give an honest opinion about a GD show,or that PigPen was a Bum,Or that without Garcia none of those guys would have even come close to making it as professional musicians.anyway,i listened to 5-8-77 for the first time again in over two years and all i can say is WOW.I was wrong,it may very well be the "greatest"show ever if you could pick one......Its Super tight the whole way through, with an Epic Row Jimmy,And the Greatest "Dancing in the streets" and "A.M. Dew" ever played. The Scarlet Fire deserves the credit it gets as one of the best ever(although my favorite is 6-7-91),great Phil Lesh on "Fire",but its probably not THE Best Scarlet Fire because the guitar solo between "Let her Pass by" and "Wind in the willows" isnt anything to write home about, and thats the best part, also, that stupid Drunk Keith is so gooddamn rudundant on the transition from Scarlet to Fire and his stupid fat ass wife wont shut the hell up with her lame ass screaming.Shes terrible.Hes an average piano guy from central casting......the whole second set is pretty insane though,GREAT NFA..They only thing i would change about this show is the encore,"1 more Sat night" was appropriate...It should have been "Ship of Fools".

The Dancin' is grate, but I think 10-10-76 is way more varied and interesting.

The last few minutes of Morning Dew are pretty stirring, but I've always been astonished how many people are willing to call this Dew the best ever or nearly so. The whole first half is really sketchy--betraying the fact that they weren't playing the song much at that time. 12-31-76, just to grab an example from around the same time, is so much better that it isn't funny.

And while the Scarlet > Fire certainly appeals to many people, it does nothing much for me. It's exceptionally tight but also unsurprising. Listening to it, I keep waiting for Jerry to do something astonishing and he never does. 4-23-77, 5-21-77, and 5-25-77 are all way better IMO, just to take three from around the same time. None of them is quite as tight as Cornell, but they are all more intriguing.

All of that said, the Not Fade Away from 5-8-77 is the best I've ever heard.

For my money the SS>NFA sequence is the meat in the 5/8/77 stew.

Standing in the rain, with his head hung low
Couldnt get a ticket, it was a sold out show
Heard the roar of the crowd, he could picture the scene
Put his ear to the wall, then like a distant scream

He heard one guitar, just blew him away
He saw stars in his eyes, and the very next day
Bought a beat up six string in a secondhand store
Didnt know how to play it, but he knew for sure

That one guitar, felt good in his hands
Didnt take long, to understand
Just one guitar, slung way down low
Was one way ticket, only one way to go

So he started rockin
Aint never gonna stop
Gotta keep on rockin
Someday hes gonna make it to the top

And be a juke box hero, got stars in his eyes
Hes a juke box hero
He took one guitar, juke box hero, stars in his eyes
Juke box hero, hell come alive tonight

In a town without a name, in a heavy downpour
Thought he passed his own shadow, by the backstage door
Like a trip through the past, to that day in the rain
And that one guitar made his whole life change

Now he needs to keep rockin
He just cant stop
Gotta keep on rockin
That boy has got to stay on top

And be a juke box hero, got stars in his eyes
Hes a juke box hero, got stars in his eyes
Yeah, juke box hero, got stars in his eyes
With that one guitar hell come alive
Come alive tonight

Yeah, hes gotta keep rockin
He just cant stop
Gotta keep on rockin
That boy has got to stay on top

And be a juke box hero, got stars in his eyes
Hes a juke box hero, got stars in his eyes
Just one guitar, put stars in his eyes
Hes just a juke box hero, aah aah aah
Juke box hero, juke box hero, hes got stars in his eyes
Stars in his eyes
